  1. Liverpool Stance On Safe Standing Discussed at Supporter Committee Meeting

The issue of safe standing areas or rail seating was discussed at a recent supporters committee meeting held with the club towards the end of may.

Lee Foley from the Official Liverpool Supporters Club addressed the meeting on the issue asking the following questions:

Who is the person(s) within the Club responsible for the decision making process on this?
Does the club consult with any external parties on this subject?
The Spirit of Shankly has research and an on-going project among members about this issue. The Club were asked to offer a view and to input into the debate. Does it intend to?

Liverpool Communications Director, Susan Black responded by saying, “the Club’s position has always been to support the majority view of the families who lost loved ones at Hillsborough.

“To date, the majority view of the Hillsborough Families has been to oppose Rail Seating and the Club understands that this majority view is still in place.”

She continued by saying, “the Club understands that the focus for the families now is any criminal prosecution against individuals and/or groups. This is expected imminently and the Club will continue to support the majority view of the families.”

Anna Burgess who represnt’s the away fans on the supporters committee said, “whilst I understand that respecting the families has to be the main priority, but focusing answers on one particular group limits the Club’s capacity to take on board everyone’s opinion.”

“It’s important that the Club broadens the opinion because as much as we do to talk about Hillsborough, standing itself wasn’t the cause of the disaster; the verdicts have shown this to be the case.

“Liverpool Football Club has a voice in the debate, and it should be heard first, not last.”

With no commitment on safe standing areas likely in the near future, the matter looks as if it will continue to be a topic for debate among the fan base whom the majority of are in favour of the areas.

  2. Liverpool Find Unlikely Backer In Neville

Liverpool have found an unlikely backer in Gary Neville after the Reds suffered a mid season slump after exits from both the FA and EFL cups and hard to swallow defeats to Swansea and Hull who are both battling relegation.

Gary Neville has tipped Liverpool to improve over the remainder of the season as their hectic schedule of games has come to an abrupt end.

Neville said,  “Liverpool had a period where they could pick the same side, they had that week to prepare. The minute that that squad hit three games a week, with the way that they play, was always going to hurt them. You cannot play that way three times a week.”

“When you are leaving six players back at base, it causes disruption, it disrupts the squad and the squad isn’t good enough.”

“Liverpool will get stronger as the season goes on. Now they are out of the cups, they are back to that period where they will have a week between games, and that is when they get can get their energy up and become devastating.”

“Next season, when they potentially get back into Europe, they will have to strengthen the squad.”

  3. Kuyt Enjoys Drink With Fans Before Chelsea Match

A Dutchman walked into a bar. Sounds like the start of a corny joke but it happened in Liverpool last night before Liverpool took on Chelsea in the premier league.

Former Liverpool fan favourite Dirk Kuyt attended last night’s match but before doing so, he enjoyed a quick drink in a pub close to the ground, believed to be The Albert.

John Paul Cushen, or @Jaap79 posted a photo of the popular Dutchman on Twitter with the caption “When Dirk Kuyt walks in for a liquor to the pub before KO”

Kuyt, now 36, spent six years at Anfield from 2006 to 2012 making 286 appearances and scoring 71 goals during that time.

He moved to Fenerbache from Liverpool and from there moved to Feyenoord where he currently plies his trade.

  4. Classy Milner Speaks About His Role Under Klopp

James Milner has yet again shown his class by speaking out about his role in Jurgen Klopp’s team.

The 30 year old who has played the majority of games at left back for the reds this season spoke to the Liverpool Echo.

“It is down to me to make sure Liverpool don’t buy a left back.”

“Klopp doesn’t owe me anything. I am a Liverpool player, he is the manager, he picks the best team to win and it is my job to make sure that what is best for Liverpool is me.”

“You read a lot about players not being honourable and loyal, but clubs are not loyal to players either. But we know what business it is.”

“I would find it harder playing left back for another manager in another system because Jurgen likes his full backs to play, he wants his teams to be fluid.”

“There are going to be times when I will end up in centre midfield and centre midfield will be covering me.”

Milner has been like a breath of fresh air sonce signing for Liverpool lasy year and has established himself as one of the first names on Jurgen Klopp’s team sheet.

He has been one of our most consistent players since signing from Manchester City on a free transfer and has been the consumate professional throughout.

  5. Whelan: Liverpool Have Tools To End Title Famine

Former Liverpool player, Ronnie Whelan has been talking up Liverpool’s title challenging credentials, saying that we now look a more balanced team than we were under our previous title challenge in 2014  but also than last year’s team under Klopp.

Writing in his column for The Irish Independent, Whelan said, “That was a statement, and a very significant one too. Liverpool have a real title challenge on and Jurgen Klopp’s victory grin had a feral look to it.”

“Most people were celebrating the goals Liverpool scored against Watford and the overwhelming momentum Klopp’s team was able to build up and sustain over a full game, but I saw other things which made me even happier. I saw a much better balance to the team.”

“I remember during the first four or five months of Brendan Rodgers’ run at the title feeling distinctly queasy about climbing on any bandwagon for two reasons.”

“The team had a bad habit of winning big and failing against weaker opposition and Rodgers had very few options to bring off the bench.”

“Liverpool had a huge win over Arsenal in early February, 2014 and I remember challenging them to go and stamp their authority on Fulham in their next game at Craven Cottage.”

“They went behind twice and left it until a Stevie Gerrard penalty in the 90th minute to win it and launch themselves on a real title chase.”

“Just a month ago, I still had some of the same doubts about Liverpool. I was concerned about brittleness at the back and inconsistency.”

“But against Watford, I saw defenders put their foot through the ball at the right time. I saw pragmatism at the back.”

Roberto Firmino celebrates after scoring for Liverpool against Watford at Anfield

Roberto Firmino celebrates after scoring for Liverpool against Watford at Anfield

“It’s great to play the ball out when it’s right to do it but sometimes it’s a much better option to just play it long. As a result, when Watford came back at Liverpool, they only got one.”

“In Rodgers’ time, that game might have ended 5-4 and even a year ago under Klopp, Liverpool would probably have conceded more.”

“However, this time when they had a dip, Watford scored but the response was a bit like Ireland when the All-Blacks inched to within four points of them in Chicago.”

“They put their heads down and went again. On came Daniel Sturridge and Gerogino Wijnaldum and Watford were pinned back again as shots peppered substitute goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon.”

“It was great to see and very encouraging. We knew Klopp had a plan and I think this was the closest the players have come to executing it fully.”

Whelan also took the time to give weight to a Bill Shankly adage about being the best team on Merseyside by making refernce to the contrasting fortunes of Liverpool and Everton over the weekend.

“What a contrast with Ronald Koeman and Everton. Just a few months ago, everyone wondered whether Liverpool would be the best club on Merseyside, never mind in England.”

“The goal difference between the two teams shifted by 10 in Liverpool’s favour in one day”

This article probably wont go down well with one Watford fan as yet another Liverpool legend has come out in praise of Klopps team but such is life when you’re winning. Must remember to post this on “The Hornet’s Nest” Watford Fans Forum.

  6. This Watford Fan Thinks Klopp Is A Fraud

A Watford fan has published their thoughts on the Watford fans forum, The Hornet’s Nest and it was clear that he or she was not impressed by what they saw of Liverpool prior to yesterday’s 6 – 1 demolition.

The rant included some pretty funny comments that I have to admit, made me laugh though as they took a pop at everyone from Sky Sports to basically all of the Liverpool legends.

“I can’t believe how much ridiculous media hype Liverpool are getting this year. Even at lunch on Sky Sports today, they had Phil Thompson spouting his 5 reasons that they will win the league. I’m sure one of which was that they had 11 players starting each game.”

“It was pretty much “1. Jurgen Klopp is the new saviour of the world. 2. We’ve got 11 players starting every game. 3. We’re the mighty Liverpool. 4. Jurgen Klopp is the new saviour of the world. (did I already say that?)”.

“What a load of utter tripe. ”

“Every day a random old Liverpool player is rolled out in front of us to tell us how fantastically amazing everything is with Liverpool and the new saviour.”

‘This love in with Jurgen Klopp “ooh Jurgen we love you”, “ooh Jurgen, how amazing it was that you broke your glasses because you’re such an awesome guy that you just love your amazing team and your amazing self so much”, “ooh Jurgen what a great formation you put out”, “Ooh Jurgen what was the secret behind your amazing transformation of the greatest football team in the world”, “Ooh Jurgen when you win the league with your amazing team, what’s the first thing your amazing self will amazingly be doing to celebrate how absolutely fantastic you and you team are”. “Ooh Jurgen what colour are your underpants this evening”.

“It’s like utterly ridiculous. Bonkers. Why is everyone in the media so desperate for Liverpool to do so well that they orgasm every time they get to spout out some other c**p about what a great and fantastic team Jurgen Klopp is creating and how wonderful it is that he has graced the humble premier league with his almighty presence.” (Editor’s note – I had to take a break to breath after I completed that sentence as there was no punctuation whatsoever used)

“Why are they all so desperate for this second rate team to get back to the heights of success they really had so, so, so long ago now. I mean, they last won the league 26 years ago. TWENTY SIX YEARS AGO. It’s not like they’ve fallen recently. They’ve not been champions for 26 years. Get over it media. Get goddamn over it.”

“Now I have absolutely nothing personal against Liverpool. (Editors Note – Really?) Heck it would be good for a second team of minnows (Editor’s Note – Minnows???) in a row to topple the other giants of English football. But this media love in is just sickening.”

“We need to stuff them… Heck, even if we stuffed them 5-0 the media would massage Jurgen’s ego telling him how it’s the awful ugly side of English football that some little brats like Watford can come along and have the audacity of winning at the famous Liverpool in front of the awesome and most amazing fans in the world on the Kop, and ruining his perfectly good day.” (Editor’s Note – I had to take another break there)

“The papers the next day would be full of how amazing Jurgen is that he showed such god-like composure after the defeat and how he’s so amazing that he will turn it around and “oh when he almost lost his glasses again, whadda super guy.”

“The Telegraph would have a field day about how we had 11 men on the pitch, that one of our players got on the bus without a ticket so should be investigated, or that Capoue’s socks were 2mm higher that the premier league regulation 32 mm below the knee so the game should be forfeit and awarded to the glorious and obviously cheated Liverpool.”

    “1-3 Watford.”

    Liverpool 6 Watford 1

Scene’s broadcast during yesterday’s stuffing, (Editor’s Note – yes, I’m using the word stuffing as it was so eloquently used by this Watford fan so it seemed fitting) showed Watford fans preferring to check their phones rather than watch the utter annihilation of their team that had unfolded in front of them.

Maybe the person responsible for writing the piece on the fans forum should have used the opportunity to remove the post to avoid another stuffing in articles like this.

    Heck, I enjoyed the game.

  7. Raheem Sterling Speaks About Controversial Liverpool Exit.

Former Liverpool Winger, Raheem Sterling, has spoken out about his time and Liverpool and about his plans to leave Liverpool before he had even signed at the age of 15.

Speaking to Gary Lineker on BBC’s Premier League show, Sterling said, “I’ve never mentioned this to anyone but I’ll never forget when me and my agent were on our way to Liverpool on the train.”

“At that time I was 15 years old and we were already talking about what we’d like to do after Liverpool if things didn’t turn out like we wanted.”

“I just said well this is a massive club and a massive opportunity for me now but I remember saying to him by the time I’m 22, if I haven’t won anything or playing in the biggest competitions then I need to assess my options.”

“You want to make sure you’re playing at the highest level. Liverpool are a great team, I never said that wasn’t the case. But at the time it was a great opportunity to come here and work with some of the best players in the world.”

“I’m not saying there aren’t some great players at Liverpool because there are but it was for me, my development and where I wanted to be. It was about playing in the Champions League and against the biggest teams like Barcelona; for me that’s a massive game to be involved in.”

“I’ve always loved Liverpool, it was a great team which helped my development. I never had any big issues there at all; with the fans or anything like that. It didn’t go the way I would have liked but it happened and you have to move on.”

Sterling angered Liverpool supporters with his attitude while playing for the club and also for the manner in which he orchestrated his big money move to Manchester City at the beginning of last season.

If this is his way of trying to appease Liverpool fans, it’s going to be about as successful as his previous interview with the BBC when he was a Liverpool player in which he was critical of the club.

  8. Spirit Of Shankly Announce Timeline For Safe Seating Consultation

Supporters group, Spirit of Shankly discussed the issue of rail seating or safe standing areas at football grounds at their recent AGM on September 24th last.

The discussion was centred around whether the supporters group should hold a position on the controversial safe standing areas. This was not a for or against debate but a vote on whether SOS should have an opinion on it.

Members voted overwhelmingly in favour of the motion and SOS today announced that they are to enter into a consultation process and debate with a number of stakeholders being asked to participate.

Some of the groups being asked include the SOS members, Hillsborough Justice Campaign, Hillsborough Family Support Group, Hope For Hillsborough, Liverpool Football Club, Football Supporters Federation, Supporters Trust, Liverpool Supporters Committee, Spion Kop 1906 and Liverpool Disabled Supporters Association.

The seating allows for people to stand safely without the possibility of crushing as the frame of the seating doubles up as a crush barriers.

Celtic have installed the seating in a portion of the ground this season as a trial and it has been used successfully used in Germany for a number of years.

  9. Firmino’s Goal Could Have Been Disallowed For Celebration

Roberto Firmino’s superb goal for Liverpool against Crystal Palace on Saturday last could have easily been ruled out. Firmino celebrated scoring the goal by removing his shirt completely, something which he usually only hints at in his goal celebrations.

The in form Brazilian received a yellow card for the celebration from referee Andre Marriner but according to the letter of the law, the goal probably should not have counted.

The rules state: If play is stopped to caution the player, an indirect free kick shall be awarded to the opposing team from the position of the ball when play was stopped.

As the ball had not crossed the goal line when Firmino removed his shirt, play could have been stopped and a yellow card issued. This would have meant that Palace would have been awarded an in-direct free kick instead of having to carry the ball to the centre spot.

But this is apparently a grey area as yellow cards that are issued for shirt removal are given for unsportsmanlike behaviour and not for a foul.

  10. Liverpool Best Side We’ve Played This Year – James McArthur

Crystal Palace midfielder has declared that Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side are the best team he has seen this season.

McArthur, despite scoring twice against Liverpool at Selhurst Park on Saturday came out on the wrong side of a 4 -1 scoreline said, ““I’d say that’s the best side we’ve played this year as a team performance.”

“The front six, the way they press the ball and rotate, they are a really strong contender this year in my opinion.”

Alan Pardew also echoed McArthur’s statement by saying Liverpool’s pace and movement made them unplayable.

Pardew said, “It’s very difficult to play against them. The speed, the runners, they’re coming from every angle. As much as I say my back four didn’t play well, I think the two set plays and the fourth goal is where I’m questioning them.”

“They’ve got some fantastic players. Firmino plays that striker’s role really clever, you don’t really know where he is and it’s unnatural for centre halves. He pulls you around, pops up in midfield, then he’s in midfield, someone else replaces him. It’s like a piston in an engine working there.”

“They are as good as anyone we’ve played this year. I’d put them in the same level as Spurs and Spurs were terrific.”
