Brazil legend, Pele says Philippe Coutinho does not need to leave Liverpool in order to win the Balon d’Or.
Speaking to Marca, 76 year old Pele was asked about Neymar’s ability to win the Balon d’Or now that he has moved to PSG. He said “Of course he can. Neymar has a football at his feet which is all he needs.”
He then continued by saying, “Coutinho is a player I think we should all look at too because he is excellent for his team. No doubts at the moment though that Neymar is the one.”
“You don’t necessarily have to change teams all the time to prove you are good. It all depends on taking your opportunities.”
This will be music to some Liverpool fans ears after the multiple unsuccessful bids from Barcelona over the summer which unsettled the Brazilian majician enough for him to submit a transfer request.
Coutinho returns to Liverpool this week after making an appearance as a substitute in Brazil’s World Cup qualifier against Ecuador where he got on the score sheet as Brazil ran out 2 – 0 winners.
Coutinho’s antics over the Barcelona interest have angered many Liverpool fans as he handed in a transfer request to try to force a move to the Catalan club before claiming that he was injured.
He was fit enough to join up with the Brazil squad where doctors claimed he showed no signs of injury and it was likely a result of stress from the entire episode.
It’s still unclear whether he will be included in Jurgen Klopp’s side to face Manchester City at the Etihad this weekend.
