Why Coutinho Won’t Leave Liverpool This Season
Speculation about Phillipe Coutinho’s future at Liverpool is fair game at the moment and it seems every publication has run with the story in some shape or form.
The way the Brazilian has played in the first ten games of the season is proof that he is becoming the player that we saw glimpses of in previous seasons.
The 24 year old has added consistency to his game this season and is putting in performances that are exciting and dare I say, even world class, so it’s no surprise to see his name filling the back pages of newspapers.
Three clubs being heavily linked with a move for Coutinho at the moment are, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Paris Saint Germain but it’s very easy to rule all three clubs out if you sit and look at the bigger picture. Lets look at these club separately.
Paris Saint Germain
The French League isn’t the most exciting league and competition for the top spot is usually minimally contested. The one thing going in PSG’s favour is that they will be able to offer a very attractive wage, but this alone will not be enough to tempt Coutinho to make the switch as I don’t think he would move for financial reasons.
That, and the fact that Liverpool are about to offer him yet another improved contract to ensure we keep him at Anfield, should rule out a financially motivated move.
Real Madrid are another of the teams reported to be keen on Coutinho’s signature but this is not something that will happen as they and Athletico Madrid have had a transfer embargo imposed on them by FIFA for breaching rules over the transfer of foreign players under 18.
The ban will span two transfer windows, January 2017 and Summer 2017, meaning the earliest that they could even think about making an offer would be January 2018.
This was appealed but the ban was upheld in September so the embargo stands, ruling Real Madrid out.
Out of the three clubs, Barcelona seems the more realistic option for Coutinho as he has stated previously that he would love to play at the Camp Nou.
It’s not difficult to rule out Barcelona when you consider their front three of Neymar, Messi & Suarez, with Iniesta and Alcacer, who would also surely be ahead of Coutinho in the pecking order.
Also consider his history. When he was at Inter Milan he was kept on the fringes. Why would he want to go to Barcelona to warm the bench, at least for the moment?
Barcelona have never been subtle about their interest in Coutinho and there were even rumours when they were buying Luis Suarez that they tried to insert a clause into the Suarez’ negotiaition for the Brazilian.
This deal could happen at some point but not this season.

Coutinho is also on the record as saying that he is very happy in Liverpool and his family live there. Also with Lucas and Firmino at the club, there is every reason for him to stay. Not to mention the Klopp effect.
Liverpool are also strong title contenders this season and stand an excellent chance of making an appearance in next years Champions League. There is also the prospect of picking up a medal in cup competitions. More reasons for the Brazilian magician to stay put.
This is of course, my opinion and things have a habit of changing very quickly in football, but I do hope that we will see him wearing the number ten jersey for Liverpool for many seasons to come.
